Heavy rainfall in Takoradi caused an artificial pitch inEffiakuma to flood, with residents, mainly children and teenagers, seen swimming and playing football in the pitch-turned pool. The video of the incident was first shared on facebook by David Tetteh Botchway,a retired football teacher at Adiembra Secondary School in Secondi-Takoradi.

The construction of the Astroturf began in 2018 and was completed in 2020at a cost of $200,00.The facility has had drainage issues since it’s opening.Hon.Joseph Cudjoe, former MP for Effia constituency said “The reason for the plethora of recreational facilities in Effia is to use them as a vehicle through which football talents develop”.

David Tetteh, academy coach at Sedan FC said “This is not the first time we have seen it flood.Usually after a few hours of rain, the surface area gets filled with rainwater”.

The recent rainfall was no surprise given the area’s history of drainage issues.Last weekend’s heavy rains pushed the limits of the Seconding-Takoradi metropolis infrastructure resulting in widespread flooding including a submerged playing surface.
