Nigerian Minister Rejects US Deportation Plans, Citing Struggles at Home
Abuja, Nigeria; The Nigerian government has firmly opposed recent proposals to repatriate Nigerian nationals deported from the United States, citing the country’s s existing economic and social challenges.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, a senior Nigerian minister stated that Nigeria’s has enough problems and is not in a position to absorb an influx of deportees. The official emphasized that the nation is currently grappling with rising unemployment, strained healthcare systems, and security concerns ” all of which make reintegration efforts difficult at this time.
We are not saying we will never cooperate on migration issues, the minister explained, but this is simply not the right time for Nigeria to take on additional burdens. Our priority is to stabilize conditions for those already struggling here at home.
The minister’s remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic conversations between the US and several African nations regarding immigration enforcement and deportation agreements.
Many Nigerians abroad have expressed fear of being returned to a country where infrastructure and support systems are already under pressure. Human rights groups have also warned that forced returns during times of domestic hardship can lead to further marginalization and suffering for deportees.
Observers say the minister’s stance could reflect broader concerns among developing nations that feel overwhelmed by both internal crises and external pressures from Western governments.
While US officials have yet to respond formally to the statement, talks are expected to continue behind closed doors in the coming weeks.
